Weird Interview Questions - Should You Ask Them?

“If you could be any vegetable…”

I have heard some really crazy questions asked of candidates. Should hiring managers ask these provocative and even goofy questions? The answer is maybe.

The reason not to do it is that it might turn some candidates off.

The reason to do it is these unorthodox questions tap into areas that are really important to business owners such as a candidate’s ability to think “on their feet” - gauging their capacity for innovative, creative, and analytical thinking.

Make sure you can defend your reasoning for asking these questions to avoid violating anti-discrimination and other employment laws.  You also need to consider the candidates’ experience.  Remember, with candidates posting their experiences on social media, by being too unconventional you may risk missing out on some A+ candidates.
